On Tuesday the celebrated prog-corridista Gerardo Ortiz released his fifth album, Hoy Más Fuerte. Yes, prog: Ortiz insists he plays “corridos progresivos” and this new album goes on way too long. Unfortunately, Fuerte is NOT an instrumental concept album devoted to cartel bosses, along the lines of Rick Wakeman’s The Six Wives of Henry VIII. (“We are honored to release a recording of this magnitude,” said A&M’s 1973 ad in The Village Voice; I bet Del and Sony feel the same way about Gerardo.)

The album’s first single, though, is an ode to “El Cholo,” the work handle of incarcerated Sinaloa Cartel honcho Orso Gastélum Ivan Cruz, captured in March for the second time after escaping prison back in 2008. Ortiz already released the first verse of this song as a teaser back in January, when El Cholo was still at large, but it’s fun to imagine the guy bragging from inside his new prison suite — “Aquí van a respetar!” Canny timing and, since it’s the only new norteño song on the lifeless charts, this week’s Pick to Click! Despite my misgivings about the album, “El Cholo” is a pretty good song, with drums set to churn and an accordion that can’t quit spitting out licks. They make it all sound so easy.

In other news, probable best singer on the continent Julión Álvarez scores his fifth Regional Mexican Airplay #1 with a middling romantic ballad, and “Propuesta Indecente” notches its 95th week on the Hot Latin chart. I’m pretty sure that makes “Propuesta Indecente” older than my orange cat, now a fully grown terror who picks on my other 14-year-old gray cat. (Orange cat has always been at war with gray cat.) Go sing the song to someone you love, and maybe it’ll go away. If not, someone you love will.

As you know if you’ve passed within 10 feet of a computer this week, Gerardo Ortiz has a new album out! (Maybe his pop-up ad onslaught only hits people with my peculiar computing habits.) Hoy Mas Fuerte (Del/Sony), his fifth studio album, is the work of a highly accomplished musician who’s transcending his genre and knows he’s in rarefied territory. He’s come a long way since 2010, when he was associated with El Movimiento Alterado and his debut CD’s booklet featured the anonymous band wearing ski masks and the phone number of somebody named only “Junior.” Since then, his hit song “Dámaso” — the best pop single so far this decade — and his fourth album, Archivos de Mi Vida, have made Ortiz the biggest name in regional Mexican music. He’s all over radio, he plays (and often opens) every awards show, and his face is at the center of radio billboards. No more ski masks or grenades in his logo; he’s got a reputation to uphold.

This is good news for Ortiz and possibly for the norteño genre, where Alterado’s ultraviolence has worn thin aesthetically and commercially, and, frankly, where too many singers have lately been shot. (“Too many” as in “more than zero.”) Billboard reports that Ortiz will tour with one of them, Alfredo Olivas, who’s on the mend, thank goodness — NOT that Olivas is affiliated with any cartels. The question is, will Ortiz’s new idol status benefit his music? If Hoy Más Fuerte is any indication… maybe, but not yet.

Fuerte furthers Ortiz’s idea of a movement devoted to progressive corridos, or “Corridos Progresivos.” My gringo friends, this is not “progressive” like progressive rock. There’s no songs with Roman numerals or harpsichords in Ortiz’s music (yet), and the songs are still short. It’s more like progressive rap. The music is more lush — not quite PM Dawn levels of lushness, but at least Arrested Development levels. The band is trying things that typical norteño bands don’t allow themselves — the rhythms switch up more often, the accordionist slides through chromatic passages that sound vaguely like he’s playing a French cafe, and the bajo sexto player plays a lot more notes than, say, Luis Hernández does. I haven’t yet seen credits for the band, but whoever they are they’re accomplished and subtle, and Ortiz has always hired some of the best players in the biz. The recording sounds great, too; Sony obviously spent plenty of money polishing the band’s sound until it gleamed.

The problem is with the songs. After half a dozen listens, nothing sticks with me except for the big ballad, “¿Por Qué Terminamos?” While everything is pleasant to hear again, I don’t need to hear anything again. Possible exception: the bachata tune “Contigo,” which is better than Calibre 50’s “Contigo” even if it’s not as good as Ortiz’s previous bachata. Maybe this will change, but right now Fuerte combines a remarkable increase in musical skill with a corresponding decrease in vibrant energy. Ortiz and his band have always been professionals, but now they’re embracing the world of professionalism.

Two rock critic concepts are worth considering here:

Within his genre, Gerardo Ortiz is enjoying his Imperial Phase, and has been at least since the 2013 release of “Dámaso.” Explained Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys, the band who coined the phrase: “It means you can do what you like, usually followed by disappearing up your backside!” Taylor Swift is also enjoying an Imperial Phase, though her rule extends over all of popular music. Ortiz and Swift are both in the zone, and they can be fairly certain that whatever they release will connect with a wide audience. In pop, audience goodwill eventually dries up and the phase ends. Whether the Imperial Phase works the same in norteño, where the audience still reserves a central place for Jenni Rivera several years after her death, remains to be seen.

It’s also too soon to tell whether Fuerte will prove Ortiz’s New Jersey (i.e., the Bon Jovi album): a hit album that follows another huge hit, scores some hit singles of its own, but ultimately feels like the beginning of a major drop in the artist’s standing. We won’t be able to tell until the next Ortiz album, when we realize how inconsequential “Terminamos?” and “El Cholo” feel to the rest of his career. I’m not saying this’ll happen. I’m just saying.

What’s remarkable is that this corridista is inviting these comparisons at all. As a gabacho, I often compare norteño artists to pop and country artists, since that’s my frame of reference. In the case of Ortiz, though, both artist and record label are blatantly reaching for those sorts of comparisons. Not that Sony is marketing Ortiz’s music to gringos — although in my corner of the internet they are — but in press releases they’re clearly positing him as a giant in his field, progressing artistically, innovating, “taking steps.” It’s impossible to imagine a record label saying such things about Los Rieleros del Norte, for instance, who release the same good album every year or so. Even last year’s return of Los Tigres didn’t seem much different than the push for any other long-running corrido band, aside from the news of their GLAAD award, which they downplayed in their modest blue-collar manner. Ortiz represents a new or at least recent phenomenon: norteño music infused with pop technique and marketed with pop savvy. The songs are almost beside the point, and there lies his downfall.

And there dawned upon the world a new era of peace and prosperity, laps filled with cats and pockets filled with frozen burritos, the sun shining all the time even at night as the world realized that, not only was Enrique Iglesias’s “Bailando” no longer #1, it was actually NOWHERE IN THE TOP 25. Do you understand what this means??? “Bailando” is no longer at war with “Propuesta Indecente.” In fact, “Bailando” has NEVER been at war with “Propuesta Indecente.” Maybe the word “contigo” doesn’t even exist, who knows? Don’t ask questions!

Despair sets in as two ugly truths also dawn upon the world:

1) This means “Propuesta Indecente” won, and IT’S STILL #3 AFTER 88 WEEKS.
2) The current #1, Nicky Jam’s “El Perdon,” features both Enrique and the same chord progression as “Bailando.”

And the world suddenly realizes it’s trapped inside an unusually danceable episode of The Twilight Zone (Gente de Zona de Penumbra?) and contemplates retiring to either an underground bunker or an airplane at 20,000 feet, because at least the world knows how those scenarios will play out. Not only is “El Perdon” #1 for the fourth week, Billboard reports it had the second best week ever on the Latin streaming chart, with 2.8 million U.S. clicks. (Which song had the best week ever? Here’s a hint: it wants to click contigo…) But it’s not just streaming; “El Perdon” is popular across the metrics:

“Perdon” stands atop the Latin Airplay chart for a third week (10.9 million audience impressions, up 5 percent) and climbs 2-1 on Latin Digital Songs (up 50 percent to 11,000 downloads), notching Jam his first digital chart-topper and Iglesias his fourth. All this action lands “Perdon” a No. 66 debut on the Hot 100, the highest rank for a Spanish-dominant title on the list since “Odio” by Romeo Santos featuring Drake peaked at No. 45 on the chart dated Feb. 15, 2014. “Perdon” is also Jam’s first Hot 100 hit.

In other news, Julión Álvarez’s unexciting but still listenable Aferrado is the #1 Latin album with 6,000 sold. I tried again with “El Amor de Su Vida,” now #24 on Hot Latin, and the best I can say is it’s unexciting but still listenable.

More exciting is the song climbing at #7 on the Regional Mexican airplay chart, Enigma Norteño’s “Calla Y Me Besas.” Thanks to some hot accordion work and tight band interplay, the song has grown on NorteñoBlog and is today’s Pick to Click:

You’d be excused for thinking the charts are dormant this week — the same #1’s, mostly the same top 10’s, “Bailando” has always been at war with “Propuesta Indecente,” etc. — but look beneath the filthy snow and there are signs of life. For one thing, NorteñoBlog will never complain about an accordion ballad reaching the Hot Latin top 10, even when that ballad is as lifeless as Calibre 50’s “Contigo.” True, this particular song might not push my buttons, but anything that helps squeeze out one of King Romeo’s romantic bellows is fine by me. (i.e., Adios to “Eres Mia,” only a year old.)

For another, some decent songs are muscling their way up. The Pick to Click is “Nota de Amor,” a pretty piano/accordion reggaeton love note by Wisin, Carlos Vives, and Daddy Yankee. It’s got the same chord changes as the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is the Love?,” though I didn’t detect any lines comparing the CIA to the KKK. We noted last week that the puro Chihuahua sax of La Maquinaria Norteña is awesome, and their “Si Te Vuelvo a Ver” is getting more radio play. And wonder of wonders, Tuscon’s teen tenor Luis Coronel is charting with a song that doesn’t suck! “Cuando La Miro” is some fairly likable magic changes bullshit. Coronel can barely keep up with it, but he knows how to put across wide-eyed eagerness.

All that plus Pitbull! NorteñoBlog will also never complain about the presence of Pitbull. And not just on the charts — in public and semi-public spaces. Even if Pitbull set up a Sheets Energy Strips display inside a funeral home and cornered NorteñoBlog, NorteñoBlog would just end up buying a bunch of energy strips and handing them out to the bereaved because, you know, it’s Pitbull. He could charm the rigor off of rigor mortis and/or Marco Rubio.

Julión Álvarez’s new White Album El Aferrado comes out next week, and already Fonovisa is protecting is assets by taking down any version of the lead single, “El Amor de Su Vida,” that leaks to the internet. I’ve seen at least three Youtubes go down since yesterday! That’s how you know it’s gonna be big. The above link seems to be the official Fonovisa audio-with-an-album-cover post; unfortunately, the song’s about as compelling as its static, monochrome “video.” Last year’s album was a breakthrough for Álvarez; it scored three Top 11 singles on the Hot Latin chart and was a NorteñoBlog favorite, making this generic new “Amor” especially disappointing. If this song wasn’t sung by Álvarez — a man who is, by most conservative estimates, the best singer on the continent — it could be any midtempo banda ballad about a lovelorn hombre wooing a buxom mujer.

Speaking of which! Gerardo Ortiz’s new album comes out in May, I think, but for the time being he’s content to keep releasing singles from his career-defining Archivos de Mi Vida. This week it’s “Perdóname,” written by singer-songwriter América Sierra; the song starts slow and boring but livens up once Ortiz strings together endless runs of triplet syllables. This makes it slightly better than Álvarez’s song, which never livens up. A year and a half after the album dropped and Ortiz is still only on his third single! The man knows how to pace himself.

Amid all the flying corazóns, this week’s Pick to Click is a sad but swinging protest corrido using chicken farming as a parable about Mexican kidnapping violence (I think — see the video screenshot above). It’s entitled “El Rancho,” by Mario ‘El Cachorro’ Delgado (Garmex). The simple tune is appealing enough, but check out the interplay between bass, guitar, and requinto, alternately locking in together and tugging at the rhythm with passages of loose virtuosity.

bomba estereoBomba Estéreo doesn’t really fall under NorteñoBlog’s purview, but their new “Fiesta” (Sony) is rat-a-tat-tat electro-cumbia with crazy manipulated voices bouncing all around. And while we’re talking Sony products outside the purview, I should mention the two Natalias: Spain’s Natalia Jiménez, whose album Creo En Mi contains NorteñoBlog fave “Quedate Con Ella” and lots of other dramatic and/or fun pop, at least one song of which features pedal steel (I’m blanking on the title). And then there’s México’s murmury Natalia Lafourcade, beloved of the Singles Jukebox though not necessarily me, with the album Hasta La Raíz. “Mi Lugar Favorito” is fun in an arty go-go boots way — sort of reminds me of Stereolab.

tono lizarragaSomehow I’ve overlooked the January debut of Toño Lizárraga y Su Banda Son de Tambora, Vuelvo a Nacer (Skalona). Based on only a couple songs, we didn’t miss too much, though the video for “Me Pegó la Gana” is entertaining, with Lizárraga’s banda overloading some rowboats as they serenade a remote jungle river.

la juntaFinally in cumbia reissues, the Magenta label has re-released two turn-of-the-millennium albums with extremely cool covers: La Junta’s No Voy a Cambiar

hernana rodriguezand Hernán Rodriguez’s De Película. I’d go with Rodriguez, since his album doesn’t open with a sappy easy listening ballad. His sappy ballad comes in the middle of the album, when you’re ready to fall down or refill your coffee. Plus it has some improbably distorted guitar.

The Hot Latin chart has its fourth #1 in as many weeks. It’s a fatalistic tuba and guitar corrido by a man who just died. This is unusual; but then, the concept of “normalcy” never really applies in the wake of death.

“El Karma” was Ariel Camacho’s first charting single, peaking at #16 on Hot Latin, which is why many news sources linked to it in the wake of his fatal car accident last week. Now it’s destined to remain his signature song. It’s also the first regional Mexican song to top the overall Hot Latin chart since 3BallMTY’s “Inténtalo,” if we’re counting electro-cumbias, or Arrolladora’s “Niña de Mi Corazon” if we’re not. This is mostly due to an increase in streaming and sales — but also, it was a slow week. Hot Latin compiles its tally from a top secret mix of digital sales, streams, and radio airplay. Below I’ve listed (as well as I could find) the tallies from the last four Hot Latin #1s, in the weeks that they reached the top. (Can you use the principles of detection to triangulate Billboard‘s top secret formula?)

As you can see, “El Karma” lags behind the other three in sales and radio play, and fewer people seemed to stream it than they did “Mi Verdad” or “Bailando.” I’m surprised “El Karma” streamed so little, actually, but look — it was just a really slow week. “El Karma” was the only new song in the top 25, and except for it and “El Perdon,” the top 10 looks basically the same as it did two weeks ago. Some of these songs are oooooold. (“Bailando” has always been at war with “Propuesta Indecente.”) The Regional Mexican airplay chart, where “El Karma” climbed back to #9, isn’t much better: new songs by Recodo and Enigma Norteña round out the bottom of the list. Pesado’s new-ish “Que Aun Te Amo” is good ol’ bouncy country, but if you haven’t listened to “El Karma” yet, you owe it to yourself.

Another chart, another week of being contigo and living contigo and dancing cont– what? What’s that? YOU SAY THAT AFTER 41 WEEKS, “BAILANDO” IS NO LONGER NUMBER 1?

[Cue Star Wars clips of the Death Star blowing up, cheesy computer-animated intergalactic societies dancing and partying in its wake. Despair sets in when we realize they’re dancing to a steel drum version of “Bailando.”]

That’s right, Enrique and the gang have been replaced by Maná and Shakira singing a bit of tissue paper called “Mi Verdad.” Say what you want about “Bailando” — and no, I cannot prove it was part of a North Korean plot to make Americans voluntarily destroy all our broadcast technology — but at least it’s memorable. A good teaching tool! If it weren’t for millions of Youtube viewers confirming “Mi Verdad” actually exists, I’d have my doubts.

Don’t shed too many tears for Enrique, though — he’s climbing at #12 on a Nicky Jam track, and anyway, “Bailando” simply moves down to #2, just ahead of the 82-week-old “Propuesta Indecente.” (“Bailando” has always been at war with “Propuesta Indecente.”) King Romeo’s doing OK, too. With his new song “Hilito” climbing to #13, Romeo Santos is getting perilously close to having four songs in the top 10 again. Speaking of which, the Singles Jukebox just covered his duet with Marc Anthony; Jonathan Bogart suggests, “The alleged woman at the center of the lyric is entirely absent: Marc and Romeo spend the entire song preening for and performing at each other, not her.”

Among this week’s new entries, the Pick to Click is Chuy Lizarraga’s banda ballad “Se Me Sigue Notando.” Calling it dramatic is like calling an Applebee’s cocktail watered down, but Lizarraga achieves his drama through the confident relaxation of his pacing. Like, the song’s really slow? And Lizarraga doesn’t seem to care, and in fact he wants you to wonder when the next phrase is going to hit. Just slow down and accept that Chuy knows what he’s doing, and your mind will open to a new realm of romantic despair. (Today’s gringo country comparison is Jamey Johnson.)

How Big Is Number 1?

For the past two weeks, regional Mexican music has claimed the #1 spot on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums chart. Keep in mind, these were two very slow weeks. How slow? Remember the week Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star was the #1 movie in America? THAT slow.

Last week Intocable was on top with their live album XX: 20 Aniversario. The week before was led by Disa’s annual compilation Las Bandas Románticas de America. (Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Wanna role-play a “tryst with the vintner’s daughter” scenario?) We’ve got a stopgap in Intocable’s case and a brazen moneymaker for Disa, neither designed to put new songs into the world. But musical irrelevance isn’t the whole story. Just behind Bandas Románticas was Privilegio, the Sony debut of hotshot corridista Alfredo Olivas. I’d assumed some pent-up hunger for this guy, who’s had multi-million-hit videos and a Triunfo cover. But sales figures reveal otherwise:

The compilation set Las Bandas Romanticas de America 2015 leads the list at No. 1 (over 2,000 units shifted, according to Nielsen Music). The album follows the 2014 edition which spent four weeks at No. 1. Newcomer Alfredo Olivas bows in the No. 2 spot with his first charting album Privilegio, starting with 2,000 copies sold. The singer-songwriter spends a second consecutive week at No. 30 on Regional Mexican Airplay with the set’s lead single “Mi Porvenir,” its peak. The track climbs 11 percent in audience impressions, to 1.5 million, in its sixth week on the chart.

I’d like to say it took a population the size of my podunk hometown to top the Latin Albums chart, but my podunk hometown was more than twice that size. 2,000 people lived in the even podunker town next door. That was the town we all made fun of. 2,000 people is not very many. Intocable didn’t do much better:

Regional Mexican group Intocable scores its seventh No. 1 on Top Latin Albums, as XX Aniversario debuts atop the list with 3,000 sold in the week ending Feb. 1, according to Nielsen Music.

This chart is not always so slow, especially when it comes to fresh-faced crossover prospects. Luis Coronel’s second album debuted to 10,000 copies sold last year, which got him to #33 on the overall Billboard 200. The year before, Gerardo Ortiz moved 14,000 copies of Archivos de Mi Vida in its first week, enough to peak at #68 on the top 200. (A busier week, apparently; he’d peaked higher in the past.) But things are down all over, right? People are setting dubious records left and right. Last April, Pharrell scored the lowest selling No. 2 album in history when he sold 29,000 copies of G I R L. I don’t bring up these low numbers to mock Intocable, Olivas, or Disa’s roster of heartthrobs. It’s just good to have a sense of scale.

Also worth noting: Top Latin Albums measures album sales only, while the top 200 has moved to a new “multi-metric” algorithm, with digital track sales contributing to an album’s placement on the big chart. This is how Enrique’s latest album is the highest Latin album on the top 200, down at #190, without topping the Latin album chart. “Bailando” still going strong! Stream it 1500 times and Enrique gets his wings a sale.

Compared to how inert they’ve been, the charts are packed with action this week, almost as full as they’re packed with Romeo Santos. (To say nothing of Romeo’s leather pants!) The upper echelons are still barely moving, though. Weirdly enough, Banda MS has two sucky ballads in the Hot Latin top 10, which measures radio play, sales, and streams, but no songs in the Regional Mexican top 20, an airplay chart. The principles of detection point to a couple possibilities:

Possibility #1. Regional Mexican radio is cooling on Banda MS’s sucky ballads but said ballads still receive lots of support from sales (no data available) and streams (video #8 has 37 million views in three months, and video #9 has 101 million in eight months). This might mean Banda MS receives support from a broader fanbase than other regional Mexican artists, or it might just mean DJs are getting tired of the sucky ballads but fans aren’t. The websites of Chicago’s two regional Mexican stations sort of support this theory, since neither lists Banda MS’s sucky ballads among their top 10 songs. That’s a limited sample size, though, and the top 10 at WOJO “Qué Buena” bears little relation to current Billboard hits.

Possibility #2. Billboard uses a different set of stations to compile the Hot Latin chart than it does the Regional Mexican chart. Without knowing what those stations are, it’s hard to figure out what this might mean. Is it possible Banda MS are getting played on more general Latin stations, or even on Latin pop stations?

The Hot Latin top 10 does have one mover and shaker, although it moved and shook there already about a month ago. Bienvenido (DE NUEVO) to the newly bevideoed “Yo También” by King Romeo, may he live on this chart forever. And because it wouldn’t be fair for one man to clog up the top 10 with four songs that’ve been kicking around for at least half a year, we bid a fond adiós to “Odio,” El Rey’s duet with El Drake. But don’t worry! Romeo’s also down at #25 with a new one, “Hilito.”

Also farewell to J. Balvin’s “6 AM,” Victor Manuelle’s electro-salsa “Que Suenen Los Tambores,” Juan Luis Guerra’s song about besos, Banda Tierra Sagrada’s “Soy Un Desmadre,” and “Al Estilo Mafia” by the nomenclaturally gifted Saul “El Jaguar” ft. La Bandononona Clave Nueva de Max Peraza. In a move as inevitable as a broken heart, Julión Álvarez’s “Dime” graduates from the regional Mexican chart to #17 Hot Latin. Fresh faced Jonatan Sanchez, Gerencia 360’s attempt to grab some of that Luis Coronel money, enters the Regional Mexican chart with “Mi Primera Vez.” I won’t attempt to tell you whether new songs by Chuy Lizarraga, Los Tucanes, and Banda Carnaval are actually NEW.
